HLTAID011 PROVIDE FIRST AID

COURSE DESCRIPTION 

(INCLUDES HLTAID009 PROVIDE CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION AND HLTAID010 PROVIDE BASIC EMERGENCY LIFE SUPPORT)

This first aid course teaches the skills and demonstrated knowledge required to recognise emergencies and provide immediate and effective first aid response and treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury.

During these sessions, you will be given instruction and practical training in line with legal, workplace and community considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

You will be trained on an array of different first aid skills and resources throughout the course, including:

  • Assessing the casualty

  • Providing safety

  • Accessing emergency services techniques

  • Practice appropriate workplace or site first aid procedures

  • Providing CPR and using a defibrillator

  • Administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis

  • Administering asthma medication

  • Assisting someone choking

  • Using appropriate immobilisation techniques for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains

  • Managing casualties with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock

What You Will Learn

  • Basic anatomy

  • Physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR using an infant, child, and adult resuscitation manikin

  • The importance of the chain of survival, written and verbal reporting of incident details, reviewing incidents to improve first aid skills and response times

  • To recognise psychological impacts and seek help as required.

Students attending our flexible delivery first aid courses must complete online pre-course work and assessment PRIOR to their practical demonstration session.

There is a practical first aid course assessment (as per the unit of competency guidelines) of two (2) minutes of uninterrupted CPR performed on the floor. If you are physically incapable of performing CPR on the floor, please contact our staff for further information.

DELIVERY METHODS

We deliver our 'public' training courses via an 'enhanced online learning' delivery method with a shortened 2-hour 'Face-to-face' assessment

Your assessment session is held at our training facility.

The session runs for approximately 2 hours of face-to-face training with a pre-course online requirement to be completed prior to the assessment. The online component may take individuals up to 5.5 hours to complete.

COURSE DELIVERY  

This course can be delivered in the candidate's workplace or at our training facility.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform practical demonstrations, such as 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

Pre-course study: Students may be required to undertake online pre-course work prior to attending assessment sessions, depending on the course delivery mode.

Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies. 

COURSE DURATION 

DUE TO COVID-19, we currently deliver training via an 'enhanced online learning' delivery method with a shortened 'face-to-face' or 'virtual' assessment. The first aid course assessment runs for approximately 2 hours, with a pre-course online requirement to be completed prior to the assessment.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)

  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario

  • Perform CPR on an infant mannequin

  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis

  • Manage a child casualty with asthma

  • Manage a choking casualty

  • Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning

  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed

  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation

  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain

  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions. 

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a first aid certification valid for?

The CPR (HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) component of this course is valid for 12 months. HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid qualifications are due for renewal 3 years after completing the course.

What do I need to prepare for the course?

There are many things you can do to stay sharp for training, such as bringing stationery items, including a pen to write and a notebook for note-taking. As we've mentioned, for those doing the online training, it is highly essential that you have access to a computer, laptop, smartphone, table or any type of electronic device with an internet connection. Particular courses may also require pre-course study for those completing online training.

If you join our face-to-face training session, water, food, and snacks might be a good idea. As for suggested wear, it might be best to wear comfortable clothes to make it easy to move during the practical demonstration and personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a face mask for those who want to socially distance themselves.
